9th Queens Police Officer Commits Suicide This Year

A veteran New York police officer was found dead on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This is the ninth officer to commit suicide this year.

The 56-year-old officer worked for the New York Police Department for over 20 years. He shot himself in his Laurelton, Queens home shortly after 6 p.m., according to police.

The officer was immediately taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His death came only one day after an officer from Yonkers committed suicide.

The New York Police Department tweeted: “We are saddened to announce that the NYPD has suffered another tragedy today with the loss of one of our officers to suicide.” The department encouraged officers who suffer from depression or other mental illness to seek help.

“To anyone who may be struggling, know that there is support available. Behind each of these resources are people that care about your well-being.”

Early in the morning on Tuesday, an off-duty police officer with the Yonkers Police Department committed suicide in his home. He had been with the police department for seven years. Yonkers has 200,000 residents, in Westchester County, north of New York City.

Over 47,000 suicides were reported in the United States in 2017. Fourteen per 100,000 people. This is the highest rate in more than half a century.

In 2018, more than 159 police officers committed suicide. This is nine percent more than the total number of officers killed in the line of duty, according to Blue H.E.L.P., which is a nonprofit organization run by active and retired police officers.

Among major U.S. cities, New York City had one of the highest officer suicide rates with 10 officers reported dead as of Jan. 1, 2019.
