2 Killed in Walmart Shooting in Southaven, Mississippi

On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, two people were killed in a shooting at a Walmart in Southaven, Mississippi. It has been reported by Southaven Police Chief Macon Moore that a former employee was in custody for the shooting.

During a mid-morning press conference, Moore stated that the suspect had been shot twice when confronted by two police officers. The suspect is in a local hospital undergoing surgery.

An officer was injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital. He is expected to be okay. According to Moore, the officer caught a bullet in his Kevlar vest and was not seriously injured.

Both of the victims were reportedly Walmart employees. One was discovered dead inside the store, and the other was found dead in the parking lot. DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco said the shooter had been an employee until Monday.

First responders were on the scene at 6:36 a.m., three minutes after the calls started coming in about the shooting. Two officers confronted the shooter outside the store, and they exchanged fire.

There were 60 employees inside Walmart at the time of the shooting. Additionally, police received reports that there was a fire set inside the store.

Moore reported that two weeks ago, the Southaven Police Department underwent active shooter response training. He believed it helped them Tuesday morning.

There’s no doubt the active shooter training session two weeks ago saved lives today.

Moore stated that Walmart was “still an active scene.” A suspicious package was found inside the store. Police did not take any questions from reporters, however, he hoped to have another update in the afternoon.

The incident shook the community of Southaven, located 15 minutes south of Memphis, Tennessee. Southaven is home to 55,000 people.

Thirty-five-year-old Carlos Odom visits his cousin at Walmart frequently. Odom was leaving Walmart at 6:30 a.m. when he heard the suspect start shooting.

According to Randy Hargrove, the suspect was still a current employee at Walmart.

“The entire Walmart family is heartbroken by the loss of two valued members of our team,” stated President and CEO of Walmart U.S. Greg Foran. He continued to say that tragedies such as this are personal, and the Walmart families’ hearts also go out to the injured officer. He said he was relieved the suspect was in custody, and thanked the officers for their quick response, as well as those of the associates.

The names of the victims and the suspect have not been released.
