Claus von Bulow, the socialite who was convicted of murdering his wife, and was later acquitted of those crimes, died on May 25, 2019. He was 92 years old.
In 1982 von Bulow, who was British, was found guilty of attempting to kill his wife Sunny, an American socialite by overdosing her on insulin.
After von Bulow was found guilty, Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close starred in a movie based on the verdict entitled “Reversal of Fortune.”
Riccardo Pavoncelli, von Bulow’s son-in-law, confirmed his death with the New York Times telling the publication he died in London in his home.
After the insulin overdose, Sunny was comatose for 28 years. Prosecutors said this was caused by her husband trying to murder her two times. Sunny never came out of her coma and remained that way until she died in 2008.
Von Bulow was acquitted of trying to kill his wife while they were at their Newport, Rhode Island estate.
The two trials in Newport, Rhode Island and later in Providence were widely covered in the 80s.
At von Bulow’s trial in 1982, the jury found him guilty of trying to kill his wife twice. The verdict was appealed and thrown out of court. Later, in 1985 at a second trial, he was acquitted of all charges.
Prosecutors alleged von Bulow wanted to murder his wife to gain her inheritance and then marry his mistress.
The defense argued Sunny had issues with low blood sugar and was a drug abuser and alcoholic. The alleged she became comatose by drinking herself into that state.
Irons won an Oscar for his role which was based on a book written by Alan Dershowitz. Dershowitz, a law professor at Harvard Law at the time, was the person who wrote the appeal which would ultimately help von Bulow be granted a second trial.
