At approximately 7:45 Sunday morning a gas leaking Tanker Truck caused an explosion on the streets of south Los Angeles, authorities say. Consequently, two civilians sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
The Los Angeles Fire Department’s Public Information Officer Cody Weireter told reporters at the scene that the explosion was caused by a nearby trailer leaking gas. The leak simultaneously caused a large explosion which either ignited the fuel or the fuel found some other ignition source. As a result, the subsequent explosion caused Los Angeles firefighters to retreat into a defensive posture.
According to Weireter, the flames were so great that firefighters had to request additional resources from their hazard material squad. Multiple additional resources from the city of Los Angeles were called upon, including assistance from the LADWP, LAPD, and also the Los Angeles Department of Sanitations.
Equipped with additional resources, firefighters immediately launched an aggressive fire attack. During this staged attack, first responders observed that one city structure had sustained heavy fire damage. Nevertheless, though there were multiple fire explosions that blew off and displaced a number of manhole covers, the fire department says that Los Angeles fire crews were able to protect and keep the flames at bay.
“A plume of thick black smoke rose into the sky over West Slauson Avenue as planes headed for nearby Los Angeles International Airport, according to photographs on social media.”
KNX field reporter and fact chaser, Pete Demetriou, indicated on his twitter feed that 3 properties on 200 block of W Slauson Ave had been damaged by the explosion. Demetriou also noted that the Fire Department Arson squad is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the cause of the explosion.
AP reported that it took more than two hours for firefighters to put out the relentless blaze.
In the aftermath, fire burned a two-story house, displacing the family that lived inside the home.
